The West School is an elementary building grades 2-5 and preschool. The school received an “Effective” rating on the Ohio Report Card. The state indicators met were 6 out of 10. The four indicators not met were, 3rd grade Reading and Math, 5th grade Math and Social Studies. The Performance Index Score was 93.5. “Adequate Yearly Progress,” was not made. The only Adequate Yearly Progress goal that was not reached was with the “students with disabilities” group in Math. The Value Added Measure composite was “below expected growth.” The 4th grade had “below expected growth in Math and Reading. The fifth grade had “below expected growth” in Math. All teachers are “Highly Qualified,” and 39% have at least a master degree. All instructional paraprofessionals are “Highly Qualified.”

Welcome to the Newcomerstown West Elementary Preschool (or welcome back)! We are very excited to start our 2010-11 school year. We are looking forward to a fun filled year with you and your child.
I will be your child’s teacher, Mrs. Fillman. This is my fourth year at West Elementary and seventh year as a preschool teacher. I have a Bachelor Degree in Early Childhood Education from Kent State University. Mrs. Shinaberry is our classroom assistant, but since she delivered her new baby boy (Easton) on Aug. 5th, she will not be starting the year with us. Ms. Murphy (our student teacher from last spring) will be our substitute assistant. Our program schedule is Monday - Thursday 8:30 am - 2:45 pm. We are flexible and want to meet your families needs. If your child will not be attending our program this fall, please call as soon as possible; for we have acquired a waiting list.
Preschoolers are invited to Newcomerstown Schools first ‘Back to School Fair’ on Tuesday, Aug. 17th at West Elementary from 10 am to 1 pm.
Newcomerstown West Elem. Open House will be held Tuesday, Aug. 24 from 6-8 pm. Your family is invited to come in, meet the teachers, see the classroom and complete some very important forms for your preschooler. Certain forms (Emergency Medical, Parent info) must be completed before your child may attend school.
Our first week of school will begin Aug. 30th. A third of the class will attend on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The entire class will come together on Thursday, Sept. 2nd. Please mark your calendars for these important dates listed above. Enjoy the remainder of summer and we will see you soon.
