Each year, in celebration of National Engineering Day, Kent State Tuscarawas Campus holds various engineering competitions for the schools in Tuscarawas County area, with 22 High Schools eligible to participate. There are 6 different competitions; AutoCAD, Robotics, Video Game Design, Web Design, Multimedia Presentation and Digital Electronics.
The competition explanations begin in early January, with completed projects due February 11th. National Engineers Day was February 18th. Students receive a 1day explanation of what is expected in the competition and how to use the programs. Students either work on the projects at Kent Tusc. or at their home school. Students who work at their home school must also submit a letter from their instructor stating that they, the student, did the project with no outside assistance. Students are also only allowed to be in an individual competition 1 time.
This year Braeden Fitzgibbon, a senior, and 4 year student in AutoCAD, competed in the AutoCAD competition. He re-created a background scene / Castle from a video game. He worked from an image of the game castle, not only doing the basic outline, but also adding the fine detail. He devoted all his spare school time to the project, having in excess of 30+ hours in the project.
For his effort, Braeden placed 1st in this years AutoCAD / Computer Aided Drafting Competition. His work is to be commended. For winning, Braeden received an engraved plaque, a $1500 scholarship, and a cash award as well. Braeden is planning on going into AutoCAD as a career. Good job Braeden. Mr John Matchett is Braeden's teacher at Newcomerstown High School. Nice work to both of you! |

All Ohio School Districts have received updated information from the Ohio Deartment of Health concerning a change in the Immunization Standards beginning with the 2010-2011 school year. This update will affect incoming Kindergarten students and students in the 7th grade for the upcoming school year.
Listed below are the NEW requirements for incoming Kindergarten students in the State of Ohio for the 2010-2011 school year:
- 5 Doses of DTaP, DTP, or DT,or any combination, if the fourth dose was administered prior to the 4th birthday. (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis)
- 4 Doses of any combination of OPV or IPV *, the final dose must be administered on or after the 4th birthday regardless of the number of previous doses. (Polio)
- 2 Doses of MMR. Dose 1 must be administered on or after the 1st birthday. The second dose must be administered at least 28 days after dose 1. (Measles, Mumps, Rubella).
- 3 Doses of Hepatitis B. The second dose must be administered at least 28 days after the first dose. The third dose must be given at least 16 weeks after the first dose and at least 8 weeks after the second dose. The last dose in the series (third or fourth) must not be administered before age 24 weeks.
- 2 Doses of Varicella* vaccine must be administered prior to entry. (Chickenpox)
* denotes change
NEW STANDARD FOR 7TH GRADE STUDENTS FOR 2010-2011 SCHOOL YEAR
- 1 Dose of Tdap or TD vaccine must be administered prior to entry to 7th grade.
The Ohio Department of Health has given the following statment concerning the additional booster for 7th grade students:
The most significant change for schools is that all 7th graders will be required to have the Tdap booster. Currently only 30% of Ohio's 7th graders have received this booster, therefore the requirement will most likely affect the majority of incoming 7th grade students. As with other school immunization requirements, students who do not provide documentation of this immunization are subjet to exclusion from school. (ORC 3313.671).
Ohio Law allows a 14 school day period for compliance with the immunization requirement. Please provide the needed information by August 25, 2010, the first day of school. As of September 14, 2010, students whose records are incomplete will be excluded from school until the needed documentation is provided to the school nurse.
If you have any questions concerning your child's immunizations, please contact Mrs. Cathy McCrea, R. N. at any of the school offices.
